BRAZIL's Port of Santos increased cargo volume 10.2 per cent year on year in the first nine months of 2020, reports Colchester's Seatrade Maritime News.
The port handled 110.1 million tonnes of cargo, while containerised cargo totalled 3.01 million TEU, a drop of 1.6 per cent compared to 2019.
The port expects to exceed 134 million tonnes of cargo it handled in 2019. The largest cargo segment is dry bulk, totalling 59 million tonnes as a 19 per cent increase, a record for the port.
Liquid bulk saw an increase of 10.6 per cent with 13.7 million tonnes, surpassing 8.2 per cent of the 2017 best year for this type of cargo.
General loose cargo fell by 2.1 per cent to four million tonnes, notwithstanding the good performance for paper pulp. There were 3,692 ships served between January 1 and September 30, a 2.1 per cent growth from 2019.
