Port of Oakland's container volume continues 3 months of growth in May
THE US Port of Oakland's container volume rose 3.8 per cent in May compared to the same month a year earlier to 213,260 TEU. It marked the third consecutive month of year-on-year growth.
"We're seeing steady improvement, especially in import cargo," said maritime director John Driscoll. "Our job now is to accelerate the momentum."
Loaded import container volume rose by 4.5 per cent in May, while export volume fell 5.6 per cent year on year. Port authorities blamed the decrease on the strong dollar, making US goods more expensive overseas. Nevertheless, the 79,890 export containers in May was the most the port has handled since last October.
