THE port of New York and New Jersey set a new monthly container throughput record in April after handling 551,117 TEU.
This milestone was reached despite import loads decreasing by 2.1 per cent in April compared to the same month a year earlier, while export loads rose by 12.9 per cent during the month. This is the third month in a row that export loads have increased by double digits when compared against 2017.
The volume of export empties fell by 2.4 per cent to 142,664 TEU in April, reported PortNews of St Petersburg, Russia.
Rail volume also reached a new monthly high with 51,777 containers, representing a year-on-year increase of 10.1 per cent. For the first time, port of NY & NJ recorded two straight months (March and April) of rail volume above 50,000 containers. Rail volume, January through April, is up 15.7 per cent over the same period in 2017.
The port complex moved 46,214 autos, up 0.3 per cent over April 2017. Auto volume in the first four months of the year rose by 3.1 per cent.
