PIRATES shied off when the 105,857 dwt Panamanian crude tanker Album showed signs it was prepared to repel boarders as the ship approached the Strait of Hormuz as armed pirates approached in a skiff firing at the bridge.
When the tanker and its six-man topside crew sighted a skiff carrying men with machine guns at five nautical miles and approaching at 20 knots.
The master raised the ship's general alarm, the crew mustered, fire pumps were activated, and the vessel altered course, according to a report from GAC Hot Port News.
After hearing the alarm, the skiff turned away from the ship's stern and travelled eastward.
It is recommended vessels within the vicinity of this alert operate with a heightened level of security and report any suspicious activity to MSCHOA, UKMTO or MARLO.
