SWISS global forwarder Panalpina says it is ready, willing and able to service Iran's pent-up demand once economic sanctions are lifted following the nuclear deal reached with western powers.
"Iran is a highly attractive market for Panalpina, one where we want to grow our business from day one when the international embargoes are lifted," Panalpina's Mideast, Africa and CIS chief Peter Triebel told Lloyd's Loading List.
"We see opportunities, first and foremost, in oil and gas. The oil and gas infrastructure has not been properly maintained and now the country has a lot to catch up in this area," he said.
"Other industries where we see great potential are high-tech, telecoms and automotive," said Mr Triebel, also noting "great opportunities" in aerospace.
"The entire fleet of Iran's airlines is outdated and needs replacement," he said. "There is great potential in consumer and retail. Despite the long-lasting sanctions, people in Iran have money to spend."
In the past, Iran has been a difficult place to do business. "What we see now, however, is a big appetite for change in the country," he said.
"So we don't expect major hurdles from a regulatory or legal world. It is relatively easy to start your own company. Another important factor is the good transport infrastructure. Iran has good roads."
Panalpina has co-operated with its Iranian agent, the Chain International Transport Co since 2000. Its head office is in Teheran and the company also has branches around the country.
Panalpina's agent employs over 110 "very well-educated and trained staff, Mr Triebel said.
"They provide all modes of transport [for cargo, including heavy-lift and oversize, as well as customs clearance and logistics services," Mr Triebel said. "If extra expertise is needed, Panalpina is ready to send project managers."
