PAKISTAN's Karachi International Container Terminal (KICT) marked the handling of 10 million TEU containers by hosting a ceremony last week attended by government and port officials.
The Federal Minister for Ports and Shipping unveiled the handling of 10 million TEU private terminal at Karachi Port, the Pakistan Telegraph reported.
KITC started operations with an annual handling turnover of 15,793 TEU in 1998 and achieved the milestone record handling of 10 million TEU containers over a period of 17 years.
Federal Minister for Ports and Shipping, Senator Kamran Michael complemented Karachi Port Trust (KPT) chairman retired Vice Admiral Shafqat Jawed and the KICT's CEO Keith Lau for making overall growth in container handling over a period of time at a very steady rate since its inception.
He said that this impressive performance also reflects on the port's efficient handling which has increased enormously through private sector participation, adding that the present government believes in the rationalisation of port charges and tariffs to remain competitive within the region.
The minister also described the ports and shipping sector as the backbone of the national economy and said that the government's intentions were clear to modernise and corporatise this vital sector of the economy.
Karachi Port Trust chairman, Mr Jawed highlighted the Port Trust 's vision of becoming the transshipment hub of the region via the operations at South Asia Pakistan Terminals in the newly established deep water container port project.
The chairman said that the KPT is gradually evolving and emerging as a new hub of maritime activities.
He further said that Karachi Port Trust is acquiring latest technology and port handling flotilla like dredgers, tug boats, pilot boats, floating cranes, and barges while pursuing the market dynamics and trends evolving in the global maritime world.
Mr Jawed further said that under the present government policies the cargo handling volumes have grown enormously at the Karachi Port and registered a record handling of 43.42 million tonnes in cargo and 1.72 million TEU containers during the ending financial year of 2014-15 showing a hefty yearly increase of 8.4 per cent and 7.5 per cent.
