MARITIME experts and Royal Navy brass will explore commercial opportunities and national security in a globalised economy at a London International Shipping Week at the Royal Society of Arts on Tuesday September 8.
The conference, organised by the Maritime Foundation in cooperation with Plymouth University, will further consider maritime risks in an era of uncertainty, and their effect on world trade.
Ninety-five per cent of goods entering and leaving the UK are handled through our ports and harbours, and over 90 per cent of world trade is carried by sea, noted conference organisers.
The opening address will be given by Dartmouth Centre for Sea Power and Strategy director Fotios Moustakis who will explain the centres role within the maritime academic institutions.
Lecturer in International Politics, Kings College London, James Scott will discuss the political economy of trade and development, while Tristan Smith, director of the Shipping in Changing Climates Project UCL Energy Institute will discuss responses to alleged global warming.
In the afternoon session, Vice Admiral Philip Jones, fleet commander and deputy chief of naval staff will set out the strategic role of the Royal Navy in safeguarding global trade and defence of the UK.
Rear Admiral Chris Parry, author of Superhighway - Sea Power in the 21st Century, will discuss geopolitics and maritime security. The final speaker will be Sunil Shastri, lecturer in maritime policy at Hull University, discuss ocean governance.
