THE number of completions and deliveries of platform supply vessels (PSVs) for offshore drilling platforms for oceanic oil and gas exploration has dropped to its lowest quarterly rate since 2013 with only 29 ships in the third quarter.
The slump has been blamed on low oil prices, reducing offshore exploration as well as inducing shipowners to delay vessel deliveries according to research by IHS Maritime & Trade.
IHS analysts report that there were 39 and 42 completed newbuildings using averaged out yearly figures for all quarters during 2013 and 2014, respectively. Year to date, the average completion rate for all three quarters of 2015 stands at 32.
The main tasks for most of these supply ships is logistics and service support and the transportation of goods, tools, equipment and personnel to and from offshore drilling platforms. PSVs include ships that carry dry bulk, chemicals and other special goods.
The data shows there are currently 1,939 PSVs in operation worldwide. Based on year-to-date production, China and the US now account for 38 per cent and 25 per cent of total PSV production, respectively.
