'OCEAN Alliance' plans to deploy up to 220 ships on US-related trades
OCEAN Alliance members CMA CGM, Cosco, Evergreen and OOCL have submitted to the Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) details about their proposed vessel sharing agreement (VSA) that covers all US trades to and from Asia, Europe and South America.
It has anticipated that the agreement will be validated and implemented by April 1 and will be valid for an initial period of five years.
The four shipping lines expect to jointly deploy up to 175 containerships with capacities ranging from 4,200 to 18,000 TEU on the US related routes, with provisions to raise the number of ships deployed to up to 220, with a maximum vessel capacity of 21,000 TEU, reports Alphaliner.
Most ships will operate within the alliance's transpacific network between Asia and North America. Separate agreements will cover the ocean liner's cooperation on trades outside of the US, including the main Asia - Europe routes.
The OCEAN Alliance carriers are expected to garner the largest market share on the Far East - North America transpacific route, with a 39 per cent share of the current capacity deployed on the trade.
