OAKLAND has announced that its January container import volume soared 75.7 per cent year on year while conceding comparison was skewed because the port did poorly in January 2015 due to labour trouble.
Compared to January 2014, the Port of Oakland's imports for January 2016 only increased 8.6 per cent to 77,637 TEU
Export volume jumped 16.8 per cent in January from a year ago, the port said. It was the first increase in Oakland export volume since last July.
Total cargo volume ¡V imports, exports and empty containers, rose 38.4 per cent for the month compared to January 2015.
"An increase in cargo volume is always welcome," said John Driscoll, the Oakland's maritime director. "But what this really shows is that we have recaptured the cargo that moved temporarily away from the west coast a year ago."
