THE Port of Oakland posted a two per cent year-year-on year increase in container throughput to 2.394 million TEU in 2014, breaking the record 2006 volume of 2.391 million TEU, and capping the year with a 20 per cent December surge to 74,356 TEU.
Import volume for the year increased 5.29 per cent, the increase attributed partly to the congestion in Los Angeles and Long Beach which diverted ships to less troublesome Oakland.
"An unprecedented series of events has brought us to this point," said port maritime director John Driscoll. "It's our job now to efficiently manage the growth."
But the increase has slowed throughput, worsened by a labour dispute between waterfront employers and dockers, which has resulted in 10-15 ships waiting for berths and truckers waiting for hours to pick up cargo.
