JAPANESE shipping giant NYK (Nippon Yusen Kaisha) Line has received the highest award at the 2013 Nikkei Global Environmental Technology Awards in recognition of its use of an energy-saving air-lubrication system on its ships.
At a ceremony held by Nikkei Inc at the Nikkei Building in Tokyo, NYK managing corporate officer Yasuo Tanaka, Oshima Shipbuilding acting president Tatsuaki Hori and MTI president Makoto Igarashi were there to receive the awards.
Said Mr Tanaka: "Being selected for the highest award from a crowd of other talented contenders is indeed an honour for us. We are deeply appreciative."
Mr Tanaka told about the development of the energy-saving air-lubrication system. "Companies not part of NYK have been placing orders for vessels equipped with this system. Ships making use of this system are increasing. For further CO2 reduction by vessels, we would like to make a strong effort to develop and operate environmentally responsive technologies that complement this system."
