JAPANESE shipping giant NYK has started participating in the Tenku no Mori Project being conducted by the National Federation of UNESCO Associations in Japan (NFUAJ) by transporting drinking water to Cambodia without charge.
In the province of Siem Reap in northwestern Cambodia, rainwater and murky well water are occasionally used for drinking water and medical purposes, leading to the spread of diarrhea and infection. To address these concerns, the project has begun sending safe water to children in the area.
The first container filled with drinking water was loaded onto a NYK-operated containership that departed in September from the port of Toyama and arrived in Phnom Penh on October 18. The drinking water was then delivered overland to Siem Reap, arriving on November 3.
The project is being conducted in cooperation with Toyama Kankyo Seibi, an environmental management company based in Japan's Toyama prefecture.
Over the next three years, 1.5 million bottles of drinking water will be sent to four government hospitals and 15 community learning centres (Terakoya).
At the same time, a sewage disposal facility will be built through the project to improve the water supply.
