JAPANESE shipping giant NYK and the Monohakobi Technology Institute (MTI) have developed "Kirari NINJA", a device that automatically photographs the interior of a vessel engine's combustion chamber.
Currently, to inspect a combustion chamber, crew has to enter the engine after it has stopped and examine it under arduous conditions of high temperature and low visibility.
The camera device has a panoramic view and lighting. By installation on the upper part of the piston in the combustion chamber, photographs in all directions of the interior can be taken during one round of vertical piston movement.
This process covers 10 minutes, reducing the crew's workload dramatically. Moreover, the photos make it possible to view in detail the condition of the inner part of the combustion chamber, said the NYK statement.
