Record amount of smuggled heroin seized
The Greek Coastguard has seized the record amount of more than two tonnes of heroin to be smuggled into the country aboard the "Noor One".
The ship has been detained and all 11 crew members have been arrested. The heroin was found by the Greek authorities in two hiding places.
The first batch of 987 kg were seized in the night of June 14 at a warehouse in an eastern suburb of Athens, while the other 1134 kg were found on June 12 in the Athens area.
The "Noor One" had received the drugs at sea between Oman and Pakistan.
The ship detained was in the port of Eleusis. Apart from the crew members, three other persons were also arrested when they tried to retrieve the drugs.
The seizure is believed to be the largest ever in Greece with an estimated value of $ 30 million. The success was achieved with the help of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency in Athens. The vessel is listed as operated by Click Shipmanagement of Piraeus and owned by Axia Ship Trading.
