A RAILCAR carrying a container of nuclear waste derailed last week in a shunting yard northwest of Paris, but remained upright and eventually continued on its way.
The French transport ministry said the train had been travelling at 7 kph at the time in the Drancy-Le Bourget marshalling yard and tests showed that the container was intact with no sign of radioactive leaks.
Fourteen hours after the accident, the train was able to continue its journey. An investigation is being conducted to determine the cause.
The Drancy town website said the incident "demonstrated once again the pressing necessity for dangerous goods to transit well away from built-up areas", reported Lloyd's Loading List.
The infamous Drancy railway yard was the assembly area for French Jews before they were moved to the extermination camps in World War II.
