New York Shipping Association lowers per box assessment 6.3pc to US$94
THE New York Shipping Association (NYSA) has announced that it is reducing the assessment 6.3 per cent on cargo that moves through the Port of New York and New Jersey, reports American Shipper.
Effective August 1, the per container charge (no matter what size), as special payout to dockers, with a destination within 260 miles of the port will be reduced to US$94 from $100 in all trades except in the Bermuda trade, which will continue to have a $25-per box rate.
"The new rates continue a decade-long trend of reduced operational costs in the Port of New York and New Jersey and further demonstrates the ongoing commitment of NYSA members to reduce the cost of doing business," said NYSA president John Nardi.
"The port handled more than 3.3 million containers in 2012, a 2.7 per cent increase from 2011. Containers with a destination within 260 miles of our port comprise nearly 80 per cent of the total, making this rate reduction very significant for the international carriers that call here," Mr Nardi said.
The assessment for cargo moving more than 260 miles from the port is $21 per container.
