AN inspection of the 4,870-TEU MSC Monterey has found that the 1.5 metre crack discovered on the vessel's main deck as it sailed past the coast of Newfoundland was caused by a defect in a welding seam.
The voyage from Antwerp to Boston was aborted on December 30 after the crew found the containership had a crack. Full repairs to the vessel will be carried out in situ, in Canada's St Mary's Bay before it sails on to Boston.
Vessel operator Reederei NSB said the ship was scanned and inspected by the Canadian Ministry of Transportation, DNV GL and representatives of the shipyard, insurer, charterer and NSB, Lloyd's List reported.
"The crack on the main deck and the outer hull is unchanged. It measures 1.5 metres on the main deck which extends for approximately 30 cm into the outer hull," NSB said.
"A welding procedure has been defined by DNV GL, which has to be followed exactly.
"Adverse weather conditions at the coast of Newfoundland of currently well below zero degrees Celsius make repair procedures somewhat difficult.
"Comprehensive preparations have to be made in order to preheat the steel and the ambient temperature as well as to adhere to the cooling rates exactly.
"Repairs will be carried out by a Canadian expert company with many experiences in this field and will probably take seven days. A representative of Germanischer Lloyd will supervise works on site."
The vessel is expected to continue its voyage on January 11 as part of its charter for Mediterranean Shipping Co.
NSB said that all 20 crew from Europe and the Philippines were safe and four passengers from the US and Switzerland had been taken ashore by helicopter.
According to Lloyd's List Intelligence, the Liberia-flagged containership was built in 2007 by Daewoo Mangalia Heavy Industries in Romania.
