THE Port of Montreal posted a six per cent first quarter container volumes increase to 326,571 TEU with an accompanying eight per cent rise in overall cargo to 6,150,728 tonnes.
The port also posted a flat year-on-year profit of C$14.5 million, an increase over the previous year, drawn on revenues of C$94.1 million, which increased eight per cent.
"Given the slow global economic recovery that characterised 2014, we can state that our results are more than satisfactory," said Montreal Port Authority CEO Sylvie Vachon.
In 2014, the increase in containerised cargo is even more significant, she said, as containers now account for the largest share of traffic at the Port of Montreal, at 41 per cent.
Dry bulk came out on top in strongest growth in 2014, up 29 per cent to 8.6 million, with grain playing the starring role, soaring 55 per cent year on year, reflecting Canada's bumper crop.
Liquid bulk was down three per cent to settle at 9.2 million tonnes.
In the Viau and Maisonneuve sectors, development was completed of a new space that can accommodate 200,000 TEU, making it ready to welcome a new container terminal to be operated by Termont Montreal.
