CARGO traffic on the Xiangjiang, a river in central China's Hunan province, is becoming busier as the rainy season causes the water to rise.
Estimates indicate that the three major city clusters centering on Changsha, Zhuzhou and Xiangtan were experiencing a 20 per cent increase in the river cargo movement in May compared to April. Local port throughput went up 15 to 20 per cent.
As of June 5, water level on the Changsha section of the Xiangjiang river rose to 31.38 metres, much higher than the designed depth of 26.35 metres of a 1,000-tonne navigational channel.
Since mid-May, Xiangjiang river's water level was rising day by day as rains continued and remained at about 30 metres throughout the month, which was the best condition for shipping in five years. A "golden season" for cargo shipping has come, said Xinhua's report.
