Mega ships make biggest contribution to throughput at Port of Nantong
NANTONG, a port on the Yangtze estuary, handled 1,818 international ships carrying 1,589 tonnes of trade cargo during the first half, according to the Nantong Maritime Bureau, reports Xinhua.
Seven hundred and fifty-two of the vessels calling were designated "mega ships" by the port authority, which gave no standard of measurement. These ships handled 6.68 million tonnes in the port.
A year-on-year comparison showed that the total of vessels handled by Nantong slipped, but the bigger ships increased 7.42 per cent. The port's throughput of foreign trade remained the same year on year.
From January to June, the port handled 95 vessels of 150,000 tonnes and over. On April 14, the 207,422-tonne Dawn Horizon discharged 96,039 tonnes at the port and remains the biggest ship ever to call at Nantong.

The 17 vessels brought 4.06 million cubic metres' LNG to the port, weighing 1.73 million tonnes, taking up 11 per cent of the port's foreign trade cargo throughput.
Since commencement of operation, Nantong have handled 34 Q-max vessels, making the it the one that handles the most of such ship among all LNG terminals in China.
