INTERNATIONAL Registries Inc (IRI), which supports the Republic of the Marshall Islands Registry, will hold receptions at the Asia Shipping Fortune Summit Shanghai between May 13-14.
The Marshall Islands registry will celebrate surpassing 100 million gross tons at the Shanghai summit.
"We are delighted to celebrate this achievement. Since 2011, there has been a 20 per cent increase in the number of Chinese owners in the Marshall Islands fleet," said IRI Asia chief Annie Ng.
The RMI Registry is globally recognised as a modern and efficient administration and is noted for its contributions to the safety and security of shipping, said the press release.
The RMI Registry is the third largest in the world and now stands at over 102 million gross tons with more than 3,100 vessels.
Said Marshall Islands President Christopher Loeak: "We see opportunities to develop ties with China. There are many areas where our two countries can co-operate to build a sustainable relationship."
The Marshall Islands, named after a British explorer, then colonised by the Spanish, Germans, Japanese and under a UN mandate by the Americans, has suzerain status with the US, akin to Hong Kong's vis-a-vis China.
