THE Hong Kong Maritime Museum is holding a careers event entitled Maritime Awareness Week from November 10 to 16 organised with the Hong Kong Shipowners' Association and companies and organisations the city's shipping community.
More than 90 per cent of global trade is carried by sea, without shipping the modern world would cease to function. Most everything we consume comes in ships by sea, say organisers.
"In the last 50 years the shipping has been overshadowed by the rise of aviation and automotive industry," said a statement from the organisers.
"Although many ports have moved out of city centres, making them less visible to the public, the volume of trade carried by ships has grown and advances in technology have made shipping an increasingly efficient and swift method of transport," the statement said.
