Sri Lanka Ports Authority tugs and navy fast attacks craft were alerted to the "MSC Daniela" which had caught fire off Sri Lanka on Apr 4, 2017 at 10.55 a.m. 120 nautical miles west of Colombo port. The Sri Lanka Navy dispatched the two Fast Attack Craft (FAC) "P 436" and "P 412", to the location assisting the Sri Lankan Port Authority which had sent the tugs "Rawana" and "Maha Wewa" which were trying to douse the flames. The two FACs were directed to immediately evacuate the ship’s crew of 22 after their arrival around midnight. The boxship was en route from Singapore to the Suez Canal. It has now been guided to a location nine miles north of Colombo port. In the morning of Apr 5 the Indian Navy also sent the "Gharial" and "Darshak" after having been requested to assist at 8.30 p.m. A Bell 212 helicopter was also deployed for extinguishing the fire on deck. The "Shoor" managed to extinguished fithe re on the port side of the vessel in the morning of Apr 5, while efforts were on to contain fire on the starboard side using external firefighting system — water cannons mixed with foam to smother the fire.
