LATEST statistics from China's Ministry of Transport (MOT) show that growth in nation's port throughput has continued to slow, although container volumes have performed better than the country's bulk sector.
China's 35 major ports handled a total of 8.6 billion tonnes of cargo in the first nine months of the year, up 2.8 per cent compared to the same period in 2014, Lloyd's Loading List reported citing an MoT report.
However, the pace is slower than the level of 4.5 per cent a year ago and 10.3 per cent in 2013.
China's domestic and external trades no longer enjoy the double-digit growth of previous years, amid weak demand. The former recorded a 3.5 per cent increase year on year in cargo volume, while the latter was up by just 1.4 per cent.
The bulk sector was the worst hit. Statistics for January-August show that China's port volume of coal handled in external trade dropped 27.9 per cent year on year, and iron ore down 1.9 per cent.
The container sector fared better, with moderate growth in throughput of 4.9 per cent.
Cargo volume for crude oil, however, rose nearly 11 per cent in the eight months due to the plunge in world oil prices and China's increasing desire for a strategic petroleum reserve.
