Maersk's Seago links Algeciras, Liverpool and Dublin from April 13
PEEL Ports, which runs the new container terminal at the Port of Liverpool, has received a big boost from Maersk's shortsea unit Seago for its loop linking west Med to Irish Sea ports.
The weekly service running between Algeciras, Liverpool and Dublin from April 13 will provide trade links to North and West Africam as well.
The new service will offer six-day transits between Algeciras and Liverpool, arriving and departing on Wednesdays.
The feeder service will strengthen Liverpool2's Irish Sea hub offering and establishing direct cargo connections to and from the north west of England to Ireland and onwards to the Mediterranean, said Peel Ports.
This is the first time that the Maersk Group Company has used Liverpool for UK cargo in 10 years and will be Maersk's first ever direct service to the Irish capital.
The announcement follows news that WEC Lines, owned by Maersk's 2M alliance partner MSC, has introduced a number of new services to the Port of Liverpool. X-press, the world's largest independent common carrier of containers, has also launched a new service in the city.
"The two services are a strong signal of intent from lines in the run-up to the opening of Liverpool2," said Peel Ports commercial director Patrick Walters.
"Carriers are being increasingly convinced by arguments of shipping closer to markets. Cargo owners are looking for ways to reduce costs, carbon emissions and congestion," he said.
Liverpool2 is to have a phased opening, with marine trials beginning in April and other elements of the semi-automated terminal coming online, with the first phase becoming fully operational in the fall.
Said Seago UK-Ireland manager Robert Clegg. "With competitive transit times and convenient berthing windows, we are well-placed to serve customers who seek new opportunities through this Mediterranean connection.
"Furthermore, our customers located in the Liverpool hinterland can now access south European and North African markets with Seago as a complementary addition to our existing offer, he said.
