MAERK Line, the world's biggest container shipping company, joins the second biggest. MSC, in announcing a low-sulphur fuel surcharges in response to EU demands that cleaner, more costly fuel be used northern European and North American coastal waters from January 1.
The surcharge will come into effect on January 1 and varies from trade lane to trade lane, depending how many miles cargo remains in the control zone when fuel reckoned to be 50-60 per cent more expensive must be used, reports Lloyd's List.
The low-sulphur surcharge is being introduced as ships transiting emission-control areas of the coast of the US and Canada and in the English Channel, North Sea and Baltic Sea are required to use fuel with a sulphur content of 0.1 per cent compared with the current limit of one per cent.
On the Asia to north Europe services, a surcharge of US$30 per FEU will be implemented. On services from the US to north Europe the Danish shipping line will charge $130 per FEU.
Cargo with an origin or destination in the Baltic zone, defined as Finland, Russia, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, will be charged an additional $100 per FEU.
The highest charge comes on services from Canada's largest eastern Port of Montreal, 1,000 miles of control zone to open sea and then another 4,000 control zone miles to Baltic from Land's End to the Port of St Petersburg, where it will implement a surcharge of $160 per FEU.
On transatlantic services, vessels will transit both the North American and north European emission-control areas.
"The surcharge level will be trade-specific and apply equally to headhaul/backhaul and dry/reefer cargo," Maersk was quoted as saying.
"The surcharge level will vary, based on the additional costs for low-sulphur fuels for the particular trade."
Maersk joins the MSC, which recently introduced low-sulphur fuel surcharges, $15 per TEU on services from Asia to northwest Europe.
On services from the Baltic to US, in which the vessels enter emission control areas in both Europe and North America, the charge will be $130 per TEU.
Services between Montreal and the Baltic will be charged $165 per TEU.
