Maersk Line has stopped loading dangerous goods in areas close to residential areas and machinery spaces on its container ships until the investigation to determine the cause of the fire on the 'Maersk Honam' has been completed and the cause of the fire is known. Maersk decided to take preventive measures by limiting the stowage of dangerous goods, in the immediate vicinity of the said areas. Maersk insisted that there was no evidence that the fire on the 'Maersk Honam' was due to dangerous goods and that all containers had been loaded in accordance with the safeguards described in the International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code. According to Maersk, no cargo of calcium hypochlorite has been declared, a product often associated with container ships of the 'Maersk Honam' class. Just a few days before the fire, the ship's insurance company, Standard Club, issued a warning on the prevention of the dangers of erroneous specified calcium hypochlorite loads, which indicates that bug declaration remains an important security issue for the shipping industry. According to Maersk, only calcium hypochlorite were transported from one consignor only and regularly checked. The shipping company investigated similar loads from shippers loaded in the area where the 'Maersk Honam' fire started to determine whether the contents of the containers corresponded to the documents. To get a complete overview of the freight composition in the cargo area where the fire brkoe out, Maersk investigated a limited amount of containers that have the same shipper, freight forwarders or commodity combination that match the containers in the specific cargo area. In total, they expected to carry out about 150 inspections and have informed the customers and asked for cooperation on these short-term initiatives.
