HYUNDAI Heavy Industries (HHI) has received Approval in Principle (AiP) from Lloyd's Register for its newly developed Onboard Guidance System for containerships, reports Athens Safety4Sea.
The system aims to prevent excessive container roll at sea and was developed in a Joint Development Project with HHI, Eastern Pacific Shipping, and Lloyd's Register.
The system evaluates the stability of containerships' roll motion, provides operational guidance and considers various loading and sea conditions connected with Hyundai Global Service's Integrated Smartship Solution.
The Onboard Guidance System underwent pilot testing on Eastern Pacific Shipping's 15,100 TEU class containership in September 2022.
Lloyd's Register also provided rules, requirement and guidance for the system as part of the AiP. Container safety is a significant issue for the maritime industry, and in this regard, Lloyd's Register has joined the Safety Tech Accelerator's Cargo Fire & Loss Innovation Initiative to reduce the incidence and impact of cargo fires or loss overboard.
Other companies in the initiative include Evergreen Line, HMM, Maersk, the Offen Group, ONE and Seaspan.
