CLERICAL members of International Longshore and Warehouse Union, whose strike closed box ships in LA and Long Beach two months ago, will vote on February 6 on a six-year contract approved by their negotiators on December 4.
The clerks, who have working without a contract, are among the highest-paid office clerks in the world, with the proposed contract salaries running an average US$190,000 a year. The clerks are fighting attempts to find cheaper labour off-dock via the internet.
The clerks, who process shipping documentation at shipping line and marine terminals in Los Angeles-Long Beach shut down 10 of the port complex's 14 container terminals for eight days in late November and early December.
The strike was effective because ILWU dockers refused to cross the clerks' the picket lines.
