THE ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, the two largest North American ports that combined account for 40 per cent of US imports, saw strong increases in container throughput in November.
Port of Los Angeles' total volumes in November rose seven per cent against the same month last year to 709,968 TEU.
Within this total import volume was up 7.6 per cent year on year to 358,423 TEU, while exports fell 5.7 per cent to 142,020 TEU, and empties rose 16.5 per cent to 209,525 TEU.
"We've seen container volumes at and above 700,000 TEU for the past six months," the port's executive director Gene Seroka said in a statement.
As for the port of Long Beach, container throughput in November increased by 6.6 per cent over the same month in 2014 to 619,699 TEU, representing the fifth straight month of volume gains.
"We have had consistent gains throughout 2015 and are on track to move more than seven million TEU this year," said Port of Long Beach CEO Jon Slangerup. "Retailers have reported a modest but healthy holiday season, which keeps us busy."
In the first 11 months of the year Long Beach volumes were up 5.5 per cent at 6,595,619 TEU, while total Los Angeles volumes at 7,534,181 TEU decreased by 1.9 per cent against 2014.
