LITHUANIA's Port of Klaipeda has become the biggest container port on the Baltic, opening up possibilities of handling China cargo via Kazakhstan, reports Xinhua.
Klaipeda port handled 127,382 TEU during the first quarter, and despite a 13.1 per cent year-on-year decline, still lifted more than Latvia's Riga, now in second place with a quarterly volume of 125,545 TEU.
The port of Klaipeda has recently attracted some attention from Chinese investors.
Hong Kong-listed China Merchants has expressed an interest in investing in the Lithuanian port, according to an earlier interview with Xinhua.
The port of Klaipeda and Lithuanian transportation authorities are actively looking for new markets.
"Lithuania may become Kazakhstan's maritime gateway to the West," said Lithuanian transport minister Rimantas Sinkevicius during a recent visit to Kazakhstan.
Goods shipped from Urumqi in China to the port of Klaipeda via the territory of Kazakhstan could be shipped further to central and western Europe, as well as Scandinavian countries.
Last year, container traffic in Klaipeda increased by 11.8 per cent to 450,400 TEU.
