GERMANY's Leipzig/Halle Airport, Europe's fifth largest air cargo hub, handled a record 112,587 tonnes of air freight in October, representing a year-on-year increase of 6.5 per cent, reports London's Air Cargo News.
'The new record for air cargo volume once again underlines that our airport is one of the most dynamically growing cargo airports in the world,' said chief executive Gotz Ahmelmann of the airport's state owners, Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG.
The airport's cargo volumes from January to October 2019 grew by 1.3 per cent to 1,025,193 tonnes.
Cargo volumes at the hub have been rising for the past 13 years and October's increase in air freight traffic is above the national trend in Germany, where volumes fell by 3.6 per cent during the month.
Leipzig/Halle Airport has vacant development space within the airport footprint and surrounding area measuring 1,400 hectares which is earmarked for the use of sectors related to logistics and air freight.
