THE number of idle containerships of more than 500 TEU has risen in recent weeks to 108 units of 297,600 TEU as at June 29, says Alphaliner.
This compares to only 82 idle units two weeks earlier. The traditional peak summer season has so far failed to provide a boost to vessel demand, as the weak cargo outlook is forcing carriers to cut back on their capacity deployment plans, said its weekly newsletter.
All sizes have been affected with four 10,000-TEUers currently idle - all G6 carriers, the result of cancelled sailings on the Asia-Europe run.
Such a fate may await Ocean 3 tonnage as it has suspended one Asia-Europe loop for 12 weeks.
Service revamps on the Far East to South America route are expected to keep vessels in the 7,000-10,000 TEU range busy in the next two months, with most additional demand to be covered by newbuildings.
"Employment prospects are dim for the panamax tonnage that is to come out of charter over the next few months. The subpanamax segment of 2,000-3,500 TEU is also witnessing a gradual build up in idle units, with no new impetus on the intra-Asia side to keep up the recent momentum. Nevertheless, demand on the Atlantic market remains relatively firm for this size bracket," said Alphaliner.
