SENIOR management of Contship Italia Group Maritime Terminals has embarked on a roadshow in Asia to drum up business for its La Spezia Container Terminal in Northern Italy that serves cargo interests in south Germany, up to Munich, and Switzerland. The group started its trip in Singapore this week and will then visit Shenzhen, Hong Kong and Shanghai.
The terminal operator is investing EUR200 million (US$222.29 million) to expand La Spezia to raise its annual container handling capacity to two million TEU, up from 1.4 million TEU at present. It is the first terminal in Italy to have quay cranes with 23 row outreach and can accommodate vessels of up to 15,000 TEU.
According to commercial director of Contship Italia, Michael Cashman, key advantages of the port are 200 weekly rail connections, and the fact it operates on Sundays. Contship not only runs the terminal but also the trains that connect to it, reported Seatrade Maritime News.
"It is quite a unique value proposition, at least in Italy," Mr Cashman said.
La Spezia currently has four weekly services calling from Asia, accounting for roughly 40 per cent of its volumes. Last year the port handled 1.1 million TEU.
Transit from Singapore to La Spezia is 17 days, while Shanghai is 27 days.
