The previous record was 8.47 million TEU in 2006, according to a statement from the port.
The Southern California port saw volumes surge 27 per cent year over year in December, making it the busiest December and fourth quarter in port history.
Loaded December imports increased 22.6 per cent to 394,217 TEU compared with the same 2015 period, while exports jumped 25.6 per cent to 164,900 TEU. The port noted empty container moves were also up 23.5 per cent from the previous December, American Shipper reported.
"The Port of LA is America's Port - and we're breaking records because we understand the importance of innovating and collaborating to move our economy forward," Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said of the results.
"We have seen incredible progress over the last two years, and it speaks to the hard work and partnership between the city, business leaders, and the workers who keep our port running smoothly every day."
Meanwhile, at the adjacent Port of Long Beach, volumes fell by six per cent year on year as carrier alliances shifted and Hanjin Shipping wound down its operations.
Total box movements in 2016 came to 6.8 million TEU, down from 7.2 million TEU the year before. MSC has since acquired Hanjin's stake in Long Beach Pier T, and the port expects a good future with the world's number two carrier as a tenant.
