THE Korean Register (KR) has launched in-house software that aims to assist vessels in economically complying with fuel oil change in line with the imposition of low sulphur regulations last month, reports London's Digital Ship.
KR says that its new Brazilian FOCO software assesses fuel consumption at actual operating speed to calculate the time required to switch over rather than relying on guestimates, which lead to burning more costly low sulphur fuel than needed.
All ships are now required to burn low-sulphur fuel when in emission control areas (ECA), which encompass the North American coast line for 200 nautical miles, though not Mexico and points south.
The other ECA covers the English Channel, the North Sea and the Baltic, but not Irish coastal waters, the Irish Sea or the Mediterranean.
"As a professional engineering service provider, we have developed a variety of technical solutions to help our ship operating customers achieve fuel economy," said KR chairman and CEO BS Park.
"This software programme comes at a time when the shipping community is working hard to comply with strict environmental controls and is part of a range of tools we are developing to help our customers and stakeholders," Dr Park said.
