The Korean Register of Shipping (KR) and the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) have signed an agreement enabling both classification societies to work more closely together, they announced in a joint statement.
They said closer cooperation will allow both organisations to deliver enhanced services to the maritime industry after KR chief executive Oh Kong-gyun and RS chief executive Mikhail Ayvazov signed the agreement in St Petersburg.
The two bodies agree to cooperate on the recruitment and training of technical staff and surveyors, explore ways of assisting ship operators and shipowners in making use of polar routes, combine KR's strength in CSR for bulk carriers and tankers with RS's strength in ice class ships, work together on classification matters, hold joint technical seminars and share knowledge and expertise through visits, secondments and other channels.
Said Dr Oh: "Combining our efforts enables us to strengthen our reach and our technical ability so we are better able to meet the demands of our global customers."
Said Mr Ayvazov: "I am convinced that the conclusion of this agreement will provide opportunities for further positive developments in both RS and KR aimed at our common advancement."
The Korean Register of Shipping is a member of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) established in 1960 with the purpose of promoting safety of life, property and the protection of the marine environment. Fellow member, the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping, established in 1913, aims to enhance standards of maritime safety and minimise the negative impact of human activities on the environment
