THE Port of Jacksonville (JAXPORT) said it recorded its best ever July container volumes with total box movements increasing 17 per cent to nearly 97,250 TEU over the same month last year.
The Florida-based port's Asian container volumes continue to show significant growth, up 11 per cent year to date with 344,730 TEU moved so far in FY2018. JAXPORT's fiscal year runs October 1 through September 30.
During the past five years, JAXPORT has recorded an average of 21 per cent annual growth in Asian container volumes. The deepening of Jacksonville's shipping channel to 47 feet to accommodate even more cargo aboard the largest ships is well underway.
JAXPORT's Puerto Rican volumes are up 33 per cent to date in FY2018 with more than 600,970 TEU moved. As the primary US port for commercial trade with Puerto Rico, JAXPORT and its partners continue to supply aid to the residents following Hurricane Maria's devastation in September last year, reports New York's Maritime Logistics Professional.
Last year, JAXPORT and private users of the harbour moved more than 1.3 million TEU.
BlueWater Reporting shows the port is called by 26 liner services that also sail to regions outside North America: 11 that deploy fully cellular containerships; 11 that deploy roll-on/roll-off vessels or pure car/truck carriers; two that deploy barges; one that deploys multipurpose vessels; and one that deploys con-ro vessels.
