HONG Kong-headquartered Seaspan Corporation has acquired a 2010-built 9,600-TEU containership that will be chartered by Japan's Ocean Network Express (ONE) at a fixed rate for a term of 36 months with an option to extend the charter by up to four months.

The containership owner and manager expects to take delivery of the vessel by the end of April 2020, expanding its fleet to 113 ships, reported New York's Maritime Professional.

Seaspan's operating fleet has a total capacity of 900,000 TEU, with an average age of seven years and an average remaining lease period of four years, on a TEU-weighted basis.

According to the company, its vessel utilisation rate rose over the three- and six-month periods ending on June 30, compared with the same time frames last year.

The increase over the first half of the year was mainly due to a decline in the number of unscheduled off-hire days and scheduled off-hire days for dry-docking.

During January and June, the company completed dry-docking for one 10,000 TEU vessel, one 9,600 TEU vessel, two 5,100 TEU vessels, one 4,250 TEU vessel, and one 2,500 TEU vessel.
