Japan to build high-performance 1,000-TEU feeders for Korean service MITSUBISHI Heavy Industries (MHI) and Hakata Shipbuilding of Imabari, Ehime Prefecture, have agreed to collaborate on the joint development of a high performance 1,000-TEU feeders.
The first order for two vessels will be deployed on time charters by Korea Marine Transport Co (KMTC). KMTC cited the new ship's superiority in loading capacity and outstanding fuel efficiency compared to regular 1,000 TEU vessels.
The collaboration between MHI and Hakata aims to build a new fuel-efficient, high-performance, high-quality and low-cost vessel and the companies plan further collaboration building such ships for international feeder market.
MHI will be responsible for hull form development and conceptual design while Hakata will undertake basic, detailed design through actual ship construction, said the release. The first two ships are to enter service from October 2014.
The first order was result of technological collaboration between MHI and Hakata, with cooperation provided by Mitsui & Co Ltd.MHI is widely recognised as a pioneer in the container carrier construction industry, its reputation backed by an abundant delivery record, said the joint statement, adding that Hakata Shipbuilding has earned high evaluations in the 1,000 TEU feeder class for excellent performance and quality.
