Iranian ports at half capacity, but still make US$1.2 billion a year
IRAN earns IRR14 trillion (US$1.14 billion) annually through cargo handling at its port and harbours, said Ataollah Sadr, head of the Iranian Ports and Maritime Organisation.
Around US$140 billion worth of goods move through Iranian ports, said the semi-official Fars News Agency. The ports have the capacity of 5.7 million TEU, but only three million TEU of the capacity is being used, said the report.
In February, the official Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) quoted Iranian Roads and Urban Development Minister Ali Nikzad as saying that the total capacity of Iranian ports has increased by 80 million tonnes during the past eight years, reaching 184 million tonnes.
Emam Khomeini and Shahid Rajaii ports are the two key ports, accounting for 90 per cent of the total capacity, he added.
Meanwhile, in February, another report quoted Mr Sadr as saying that building 60 small and multi-purpose ports across Iran is underway. He went on to say that 11 major ports of Iran have the loading and unloading capacity of up to 172 million tonnes.
In December 2012, Mr Sadr said that capacities at Shahid Rajaee Port, Shahid Beheshti Port, and Bandar Anzali Port will be doubled respectively to six million tonnnes, six million tonnes and 16 million tonnes.
He added that just 135 million tonnes of the ports' capacity is being used for loading and unloading goods.
