Indian Railways is rolling out artificial intelligence across its network to improve safety, manage crowds, protect wildlife and enhance passenger experience, reported Delhi's Indian Express. A machine vision inspection system (MVIS) is being installed to monitor rolling stock health. The AI-powered system captures high-resolution images of train under-gear to detect faults and reduce manual inspections, aiming to prevent accidents and service disruptions.
Following a deadly stampede at New Delhi station earlier this year, Railways will build permanent holding zones at 60 high-traffic stations and deploy AI for crowd and crisis management. Colour-coded zones and directional signage will guide passengers to avoid congestion.
An intrusion detection system using acoustic sensors is active across 141 km of Northeast Frontier Railway to alert drivers of nearby elephants and wildlife. Honey bee buzzers have also been installed at crossings to deter animals from tracks.
CCTV cameras will be fitted in 74,000 coaches and 15,000 locomotives, with AI-enabled surveillance to detect unusual behaviour. Seven major stations, including Howrah, CSMT, New Delhi and Chennai, will get facial recognition systems to speed up ticket checks and improve security.
AI will also support digital ticketing, route recommendations and real-time travel updates. Tech expert Ankush Sharma said railways offer a 'living laboratory' for AI innovation, with potential to create smarter, greener and safer transport infrastructure.
