Huawei's Meng gets bail as Trump offers to intervene if necessary

DETAINED Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou has been granted C$10 million (US$7

12 December 2018 - 19:00

DETAINED Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou has been granted C$10 million (US$7.5 million) bail by a Vancouver court, Reuters reports, amid intense anger from Chinese groups over her arrest a week ago.

The CFO will be monitored and face a curfew during the bail period, her attorney said, as a judge considers whether charges of fraudulent banking activity to sidestep US sanctions in Iran are strong enough to support her extradition south of the border.

President Donald Trump said that he is willing to intervene in the case if it would be in the interests of national security or furthering trade deal negotiations.

'If I think it's good for the country, if I think it's good for what will be certainly the largest trade deal ever made - which is a very important thing - what's good for national security - I would certainly intervene if I thought it was necessary,' President Trump told reporters.

A potentially significant development also came on Tuesday as reports broke that former Canadian diplomat Michael Kovrig had been detained in China and that his family and current employer were pushing for his release.
