THE US Port of Houston's container throughput over the first eight months of the year has risen 5.7 per cent compared to the same period last year to 1.34 million TEU.
However, container volume in August fell 5.4 per cent from the previous month and 4.7 per cent compared to the same month a year earlier, to 176,900 TEU.
Within the August total, loaded containers amounted to 139,334 TEU, down from 140,692 TEU last year. Loaded exports totalled 79,209 TEU, versus 84,291 TEU in the same month last year, while loaded imports rose to 60,125 TEU, up from 56,401 TEU.
Empty containers dropped 16.5 per cent year-on-year in August to 37,566 TEU. Empty imports fell to 23,116 TEU from 32,603 TEU. Empty exports climbed to 14,450 TEU from 12,403 TEU in August 2012.
From January to August, loaded imports totalled 419,751 TEU, up 5.8 per cent year-on-year, and loaded exports were up 4.8 per cent to 610,980 TEU. Total loaded containers rose 5.2 per cent to 1.03 million TEU. Empty imports jumped 10.7 compared to the previous year, to 229,981 TEU, while empty exports shed 1.0 per cent to 81,717 TEU. Total empties were up 7.4 per cent year-on-year to 311,698 TEU, reports the Journal of Commerce.
According to the port's Executive Director Len Waterworth the port's monthly net income had risen year-on-year by US$7 million, or 212 per cent, to $11 million in August. Year-to-date net income grew by $10 million or 38 per cent. He said the gains were mainly driven by grants.
