THE Hong Kong Shipowners Association is hosting an afternoon seminar on the topics of, "Reducing Lifecycle Costs via Pipe Refurbishment and Pipe Coating in Chinese Dockyards" on October 7 at the United Conference Centre in Hong Kong, especially for technical managers and purchasers with vessels coming up on their second scheduled dockings.
"Extended docking intervals reduce the opportunities for technical managers to renew vital seawater systems without resorting to off-hire. This presents a special challenge for vessels docked in China because most Chinese dockyards can only offer inadequate pipe coatings," said main speaker, Irwin Group CEO David Schaus.
"No steel seawater pipe will last the lifetime of a vessel so proper planning is important to manage rather than react to inevitable requirement to renew these pipes," he said.
Technical managers will learn at the seminar how seawater pipes (cooling, ballast and heeling) can have their lives extended for ten-plus years via a refurbishment process during dockings at a "fraction of the cost of fabricating new pipes.
By the end of this seminar, third-party ship managers will be able to show their vessel owners how off-hire risks can be reduced and how budgets for pipe renewal can be reduced by up to 70 per cent by changing the process for pipe maintenance during dockings.
The Irwin Group includes Irwin Marine Services Ltd, Irwin Rotational Lining Shenzhen Co Ltd and OSRO China Ltd.
Having observed the inability of Chinese dockyards to coat and refurbish pipes, Mr Schaus is said to have opened Irwin Rotational Lining's pipe refurbishment and coating shop in 2014, after founding the group of companies he now leads.
