HONGKONG International Terminals (HIT) gave its 1,200 dockers a pep talk, challenging them to join the company in lobbying the government for more back-up land at the Kwai Tsing container complex.
HIT managing director Gerry Yim urged them to join the company's plea that the government provide the terminal back-up land and address the Transport and Housing Bureau directly via email pml@thb.gov.hk before August 15.
Mr Yim said Hong Kong’s trade development relies on port facilities support and there is an urgent need to rationalise the land usage around Kwai Tsing port to alleviate port congestion and increase productivity.
The men attended three town hall talks at which Mr Yim also highlighted the progress of a 40-week efficiency enhancement study, BOXplus Building Operations Excellence, with noticeable improvements in berth productivity rate, accuracy of estimated time of departure, operation delay and preventive maintenance.
The Hong Kong Government launched a public consultation on proposals for enhancing the use of port back-up land in Kwai Tsing in June to raise the handling efficiency of Kwai Tsing’s container terminals.
