Genoa box shops defy EU trend as volumes rise 12pc to 2.1 million TEU
GENOA's container terminal trade increased 11.8 per cent last year to a record 2.1 million TEU, with all four box-handling facilities recorded growth.
The Voltri Terminal Europe experienced a nine per cent increase in container throughput to reach 1.2 million TEU; SECH was up 16.9 per cent to 327,204 TEU; Messina saw volumes rise 3.1 per cent to 211,894 TEU; and Genoa Port Terminal grew 52.8 per cent to 221,978 TEU.
"Genoa continues to be strongest in the Far East-Europe corridor, which in 2012 accounted for 30 per cent of the port's total TEU throughput. Container traffic to/from the Far East fell by five per cent compared to the previous year," said port authority spokesman Pietro Dante Oddone.
At present, Genoa can accommodate three million TEU, and there are two major container terminal infrastructure developments under way.
The new 800,000-TEU Calata Bettolo container terminal will be open by 2015, while the landfill works being undertaken between Ronco and Canepa piers will create new yard space in the Sampierdarena basin, which will come on line in the first quarter of 2015, reports the UK's Port Strategy journal.
Dredging operations at VTE and SECH are also paving the way for the latest generation of 14,000 TEU+ ships, which are being matched by the acquisition of new handling equipment with an 18-row outreach, according to Mr Oddone.
