GAC Russia has opened an office at the new Sabetta port on Ob Bay in Yamal Peninsula to provide ship agency and support services for calling vessels.
The company said in a release that the establishment of an office at Sabetta -- one of the key ports on the Northern Sea route -- is a natural next step in the strategic positioning of itself as an agent for ships plying the waterway. It now provides agency services at both Murmansk and Sabetta along the route.
"This is an opportunity for us to use our vast experience in operating in extreme environments. Given the harsh weather conditions and isolation of the region, the challenges are significant and will require extremely close coordination and attention to supporting port call activities," said managing director Arkady Podkopaev.
The port, where air temperatures drop to around minus 40 degrees celsius in winter, is ice-bound from October to June, and ice breakers have to be used to make the port accessible year-round.
The region in which Sabetta is located has a vast potential in terms of onshore and offshore oil and gas fields development and a number of considerable oil and gas projects are already at various phases of development.
