The controversial first transport of nuclear waste on a river in Germany started on June 28, 2017, under police protection. At the decommissioned nuclear power plant Obrigheim (Neckar-Odenwald-municipality) the "Ronja" with a barge started the transport of three castors under contract of the energy supplier EnBW from Obrigheim to Neckarwestheim where they were to be deposited in an intermediate storage. The voyage of 50 kilometers on the lower Neckar was expected to take around 12 hours. Nuclear adversaries have announced protests. The police guarded the transport with boats, a helicopter and forces on shore. Each of the three Castor containers was mounted on a vessel on board the barge. The vehicles were rolled directly onto the ship in Obrigheim and would remain there for the entire journey. The company was planning a total of five journeys with three Castors each in the coming weeks with a total of 342 fuel elements.
